kHEARTs is a social entreprise that seeks to provide a sustainable income for the members at Simei Care Centre. It is managed by a team S.A.N.E ~Simply A Nice Expression of 4 students from the National University of Singapore. The venture first started out under the Citibank-YMCA Youth for Causes 2007 competition, which is an event under the umbrella of President's Challenge 2007.
In the initial stage of planning, the following aims are mapped out:
• Help the members reintegrate back into the community.
- Objective: help them to acquire simple art and craft skills, as well as social skills where they can be at the project site to promote their products. Opportunities are thus provided for them to take baby steps to interact with the public which will eventually help dispel the misconceptions about them, and also help these members to relate to the public.
• Reduce their negative symptoms such as the lack of motivation, confidence as well as low self-esteem.
- Objective: To empower them where their skills are ‘purchased’ thus showing that they are abled-people who can be self-sufficient, and that their products are bought by people not out of sympathy but as a necessity.
• Reduce the stigma which is associated with mental illness where “public perception of insanity is a major barrier to treatment”
- Objective: To increase public awareness of mental health stigma and discrimination. Through interaction with the members and by means of our publicity stunts that will let the public learn more about mental illness , will work towards the aim of dispelling myths of people with mental health problems. This objective is based on the Systems Theory, where the environment of an individual affects his/her well-being. Hence, having stronger social support will help the members to cope better with their rehabilitation process.
